Roadside Tree Pruning: Mature Oak Tree
Managing mature trees alongside busy roads requires careful planning, specialist equipment and an experienced team. For this project, Beechwood Tree Care was tasked with reducing a large oak tree whose canopy extended over a busy roadway.
This was a challenging project due to the location of the tree and its proximity to a public road. We needed to safely reduce the mature oak tree without impacting access to the road, allowing public access and ensuring the safety of our team throughout.
Rather than removing the oak entirely, our team carried out targeted roadside tree pruning to address the structural concerns while retaining the mature tree and maintaining its natural shape.
Project Overview
Following an assessment by a tree consultant, a significant crown reduction was specified due to concerns over the likelihood of failure. The mature oak showed signs of previous branch failure, with additional concerns surrounding the union of a smaller, subdominant stem. Several large branches also extended towards the carriageway, creating considerable leverage across the canopy.
Our work focused on carrying out the specified crown reduction, carefully removing selected sections of growth to reduce weight and leverage on vulnerable areas of the tree.
Using controlled pruning techniques, we were able to complete the required reduction while leaving the oak with a balanced, natural-looking canopy.
Creating A Safe Working Environment For Roadside Tree Pruning
The location made this roadside tree pruning project more complex than a standard crown reduction. As the oak extended over both lanes of a busy road, the road needed to be closed while our arborists completed the work.
This created a controlled working area for the team and allowed the tree to be pruned without putting passing traffic or members of the public at risk.
Controlled Crown Reduction & Tree Pruning
A significant crown reduction does not have to leave a mature tree looking heavily cut back or unnatural. Our team carefully reduced the roadside canopy, removing some substantial sections of growth and bringing the crown back to approximately the middle of the road.
Some of the branches removed were around 2.5 to 3 metres long, demonstrating just how much could be taken away from the tree through targeted pruning.
Once one side had been completed, the team continued around the tree and reduced growth from the subdominant stem.
Throughout the work, our focus was on carrying out a controlled and considered reduction. Each cut was carefully planned to reduce the load on vulnerable areas of the tree while maintaining a balanced, natural-looking oak canopy.

Project Outcome

This is an important part of professional tree pruning. Where circumstances allow, mature trees can often be managed rather than removed entirely.
The finished tree remained an important feature of its surroundings, but with a considerably reduced canopy extending towards the busy road, making it safer for everyone.
