A little tight job today. We’ve got this declining oak to deal with that we are going to do some retrenchment pruning on this tree and we are going to make it smaller but keep as much leaf area as we can.
Retrenchment pruning mimics the natural ageing process of a tree. The other side of this is a really busy main road. So the roto’s in and as you can see, it’s all a bit tight.
Tom’s just about to go up the tree and is going to cut the bulk of the tree and stack it onto the trailer. That’s our job for the day.
We can see the target area of this tree, and you can see the condition of it. We are just about to take the first section out, but this is why the tree is being reduced in height. This technique will stop branches falling onto the road.
Now we can see the sawdust coming down from where Tom is making the first cut. Slowly progressing down, taking more and more of that dead top out.
We are taking out sections like this one here. It’s a good five meter section, a good half a ton, and then we are going to load that onto the trailer there and take that away.
You can see how dramatic the reduction in height is of this tree. We are making it squatter and smaller. Simon’s just doing the final piece.
Here we are, retrenchment pruning almost done for today, Tom’s finished all his climbing, and here is the finished job.
So we’ve retained as much foliage as we can, which isn’t a huge amount, but the tree is significantly squatter and smaller, and that is retrenchment pruning, reducing the tree into its lower canopy.
