Today we’re on site and we are looking after this glorious Scots pine, what a fantastic tree. What we’re going to do is we’re going to crown reduce this tree and we’re going to replace the brace that’s in it.
It’s got a flexible dynamic brace in there that’s not really doing a lot to be honest. We’re going to reduce the tree and then we’re going to replace that brace. And the reason that we’re doing that is because it’s a twin stem tree and the union between those twin stems is quite weak.
You’ll see a lot of swelling on there when we go in and have a look at it and we want to stop this tree from falling apart because it’s in quite an exposed location, but it’s a glorious tree.
Here’s the base of this tree, and you can see that tight union, what we call an included union between the two stems.
And if you look carefully, you can see where it’s swelling at the join point. And if I come round, you can see there’s a distinctive flare either side, which means the tree’s putting on extra wood in that area to try and deal with this defect. So, what we’re doing is taking away the leverage and giving it some extra support in the form of the brace to help it over to the other side.
Now, continuing that reduction the cherry picker really allows us to get right out on the tips and retain the natural tree. Probably a third of the way through the reduction, and you can see how much has come off big sections, two meters.
The reduction’s complete, tidy up, and then we’ll be up there sorting the brace. So now we’re going to put the brace in, but unfortunately, the cherry pickers had a moment. So here arrives our engineer to fix the cherry picker, and we’ve gone back to old school, so climbing up there.
So here we are, up tree. They’ve put in this winch and they’ve winched together the two stems. They’ve cut out the old brace and now they’re starting to install the new brace. It takes a little bit of adjustment just to try and get it to a reasonably tight place.
And then what we’re going to do is we’re going to release this pressure off this winch and see if we’ve got it in the right place.
Here’s our final brace installation. That’s some dynamic bracing that’s got a little bit of stretch in it, and just on that bit, you can see that little tag says 2026, just so you can see from the ground when it is installed.
We’ve left these tails on there as well, so that we can come up and adjust it in the future. And as the wind blows, that’ll just take up the slack and the strain and help this tree with that defect down the bottom. So, the final installed brace.
Protected and saved for future generations. Quite a nice view of the Scots Pine from this side. Just, coming up the drive here and you can see what a splendid tree it is really worth the effort to give it a prune and renew that brace. Really pleased with how it’s turned out. Still looks like a tree.
We know we’re taking a lot of leverage off and we’re put in a brace that’s actually doing something and will last now for another eight years. So good job. Very happy indeed. So as you come up the drive, if I show you this view of the pine, what a stunning tree. So really when you got to brace a tree, it’s got to be worth the effort, the time, and the money.
And I could pretty comfortably say that this Scot’s Pine is, it’s a great example of a tree. It’s just got a really big defect, so pruned it reduced the leverage, put in a functioning dynamic brace and that’ll add stability to it and aid the retention of this tree.
