Appreciating Our Native Trees: A Walk Through The Landscape With Beechwood

I’m in this little valley, just off the coast, in this rugged coastal landscape, and it just made me think about our native species of trees.
So, I’m just walking up to this cracking silver birch tree in this valley that probably hasn’t changed for a couple of thousand years. I mean, it’s a sort of grazed landscape, I suppose. So since humans started grazing here, it would’ve been like this, but it’s bracken and gorse. And the trees that are surviving here, a birch, a silver birch here.
There’s another couple of little ones down there. You’ve got this little one here, and then behind me, another one there. You’ve also got a little Hawthorn just on the other side of the bank there, that’s a holly.
And these are the trees that can survive or have been left in this landscape and we just forget, or I just forget, maybe just how beautiful they are. We get a little bit obsessed with conifers from all around the world and certain Japanese maples and lovely ornamental trees, and just forget how awesome our native trees are.
Look at this birch. This is a big birch. I’d say this is 50, 60, 70 years old. Obviously the beauty of a tree is you could never tell, but that’s big. That’s big for a birch. And you’ve got some witches broom appearing in there. I can’t remember exactly why they appear, it’s a genetic defect I think. But cracking, I mean this landscape as well is just fantastic.
