Willow Pollarding: Comprehensive Tree Care for Field Boundaries
Neil and the team at Beechwood Tree Care recently embarked on a project for a local landowner, regarding a dead oak that was overhanging a ditch between two fields as well as overgrown willow trees which were impacting access to the field.
For this project, the team were located in a field, with the majority of their work taking place along a boundary which separated the two areas. The landscape included a natural ditch fed by a spring, resulting in a wet environment which required particular patience and care to navigate safely.
There are two main aspects to this project, we required our tree surgeons’ skills and expertise to get right.
Project Overview: Oak Tree Removal and Willow Pollarding
Tree removal was required for an old, fallen oak which was overhanging the boundary line. However, this was not the main portion of this project, as the client had also requested pollarding to treat overgrown willow trees.
The willow trees were located along the ditch line of the field and had begun to fall apart, causing obstructions to the field and limiting access when using a combine or other equipment.
As this drastically interfered with the client’s work, it was vital that the willow trees were treated well and reduced effectively. It had been requested that we pollard these trees, as this would reduce them, so they would be easier to manage in the future.
Part One: Safe Dismantling of a Dead Oak
Our first step in this project was dismantling and removing a dead oak tree, which was obstructing the boundary lines. This oak tree had been overhanging a small hedgerow along the road and posed a potential hazard to the landowner and road users.
To make the environment safe once more, Beechwood Tree Care expertly cut down the tree and relocated it into the field, minimising any disruption to the area around it.
Part Two: Willow Pollarding and Revitalisation
The most significant portion of this project was the willow pollarding for the overground trees. As you can see in the video, these mature trees were beginning to break down. Sections of them were extending over the crop field, making it challenging for the combine to effectively traverse down the rows.
Removing these trees was not the right option, as they had been part of the landscape for at least 100 years. Pollarding instead allows the trees to remain, but cut them back down to the trunk or ‘knuckle.’
This process prevents the trees from falling apart where they would clutter the crop field and also ensures that these trees endure for another century. Using our Big Green Tree Cutting Machine, the Beechwood Tree Care effectively reduced the willow trees and quickly handled the large volume.
