Hi, I’m Neil from Beechwood Tree Care and we’ve got an exciting little project on this Mulberry. Let’s have a look. So, this Mulberry had a leader fail recently it’s quite a common phenomenon called summer branch drop. So, you get a really dry spell and then you get a heavy bout of rain and a limb will fail.
If we look at the stem this has got a bit of decay in the stem anyway, but they really want to retain this tree. So we’ve been given this exciting little job to reduce this tree and prop the limbs either side.
At the moment, this is just us working out how we’re going to achieve it, and then we’ll come back, prune this tree, prop it up, and then keep it there for future generations.
I’m just back to check on the works of the Mulberry. So you can see here it looks quite radically different.
So this side has been crown reduced. Tom’s done a lovely job there, just keeping the shape of that tree. And we’ve installed these stainless steel props. They’ve come out really nicely actually. I’m really pleased with those.
So here’s the one on this stem, the fabricator has done a lovely job of making them look great, and they’ve got these big spreader plates on the base there you can see those.
And then they’ve got steel pins that go in and hold them in place so we don’t have any concrete in there affecting the roots. That’s on this side. You can see there, there was the big failure within the tree and this side was radically pruned because there was a lot more decay in this side.
And another prop put in here. Effectively this side has been pollarded, which means taking all the growth back off to a knuckle. And it’ll resprout from there.
And that big prop’s been put back in. Actually, you see on the ground here, this is what we call cell web. So this would’ve been used to try and avoid compaction, I guess, when they made this building here.
And these works will hopefully keep this tree here for many years to come. It does look a little sparse at the moment, but if you come around this side you still have that really nice Mulberry, really pleased with that job.
Hopefully that was something interesting for you to look at. We’ve just explained a bit about how we can save trees rather than just cutting them down all the time.
