Deadwood Removal Over Public Footpath: Safety Works

At Beechwood Tree Care, we are not just passionate about trees, but also about safety, as this latest project demonstrates. Deadwood removal is a proactive measure that we use to help to protect public walkways from falling tree branches.

This is just one example of the ways our team serves the local community and strives to create sustainable, attractive environments.

Project Overview: Oak Tree Deadwood Removal

This project is a form of safety work by the team, where we proactively remove deadwood from some oak trees that were overlapping a popular dog-walking route in the area.

Deadwood refers to deceased branches within a tree, they can pose a serious risk of injury in public spaces like this, as they are prone to falling. Due to the age and size of these oak trees, much of the falling deadwood could be dangerous, which is why we were called to remove them.

Location And Access Challenges

The site was on a well-loved footpath in the area, which ran through open fields. While the trees leading into the fields were not much of a concern, those overlapping the public footpath needed to be addressed.

However, due to the narrow pathway, we were unable to use a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), which would be our traditional method for pruning or deadwood removal. This machine would block public access, which is why we had to rely on rope climbing techniques for this deadwood removal.

Industry Standards For Rope Climbing

As with everything we do at Beechwood Tree Care, we remain compliant to industry and national safety standards to protect our tree surgeons, the landscape, and the public.

During this deadwood removal, our climbers demonstrated the industry-standard procedure of using double-rope techniques. With two ropes, our climbers ensure two anchor points at all times.

This approach not only provides maximum safety but also ensures full compliance with current legislation for this equipment.

Deadwood Removal Process

First, we identified and isolated the hazardous deadwood, which would pose the most significant risks to the public and our climbers, these branches and deadwood would be removed first.

We relied on ropes and climbing equipment to access the trees in this narrow public walkway. These ropes allowed us to reach the tree crown safely so we could accurately cut and lower all deadwood to prevent further damage or regrowth.

Using our rope system, we carefully lowered all pieces of deadwood to the ground, which would be disposed of in our chipper.

The Finished Result: Complete Deadwood Removal

We successfully removed the deadwood from five oak trees and one ash tree, which were growing over the public walkway, creating a safe environment for members of the public to enjoy.

Thanks to the work of our amazing team, the site has been left clear and safe for the public to use once more.
