Hi, I am Neil from Beachwood Tree Care. I’ve just come to see one of our teams who are working out here and they’re removing deadwood from trees over a busy footpath. This is for safety works, so let’s go have a look what they’re up to.

So our team are working on this lane, which is actually quite a popular dog walking spot and what they’re doing is they’re taking the deadwood, the larger bits of deadwood out of several oak trees.

So obviously deadwood is dead branches that will eventually fall out of the tree. So, they’re preempting this by removing it and shortening it. But in this location, the only danger area really is this track, which is also a footpath. So, if it’s over the field either side, it’s being left, but it’s just the deadwood over the track.

So here you can see the chipper just in front of us on the right hand side, and you can maybe see some ropes dangling down. Let’s go and see what we’ve got. Look, so these trees are being accessed, using the normal climbing techniques.

So in order to get within the crown, we couldn’t use a MEWP here because we would block the track for starters, and then that MEWP wouldn’t be able to wind its way through the crown. But a climber on sets of ropes will. You’ll notice that each climber has two ropes, which is complying with the legislation.

So they’ve got two separate anchor points at all times as they work their way around the tree, which is just a very sensible approach. We’re climbing a non determined structure and we’re using cutting things. So having two ropes rather than one, it’s just a lot safer and actually is just complying with legislation.

If you see a tree surgeon on the upper tree now and they’re on one rope. They’re actually breaking the law. So Rowan here is just working the ground here. Just be clearing up this deadwood. You can see all this has come out from the top. You can see these are fair old chunks of deadwood if this came down and hit a dog walker, that’s going to hurt.

So that’s why we’re taking them out. Alex is up there somewhere and up this one here you can see Soly just working his way up the tree and he’s going be taking out, you can see a big section of deadwood there, he’ll be removing that and they’ll be working their way down through, I think there are five oaks and an ash here in this section. And that’s their little job for the day. And then obviously everybody can walk down this path with their dogs without fear in the winter of a big chunk of a tree falling down and clumping them on the head.

But, check out that view. They’ve got a nice little spot for lunch today I guess they’re gonna be looking out, down over the Thames and off in the distance towards Henley. So there we go. So that’s what this team are up to. It’s quite a common process that we do removing deadwood we’re just ensuring safety basically.
